Austin ISD’s guaranteed and viable curriculum is based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), College and Career Readiness Standards(CCRS), English Language Proficiency Standards(ELPS), and 21st Century Skills. The AISD curriculum promotes high expectations for student achievement. The Foundation subjects include English Language Arts and Reading, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. ART
Art instruction is provided by a specialist in grades K-5. Student artwork is displayed on campus and in the community.
LIBRARY
All students will visit the library with classes, in small groups, or individually, for book check-out, storytelling, and skills activities.
MUSIC
Music instruction is provided by a specialist in grades kindergarten through fifth grade. Students in third through fifth grade participate in an annual city-wide Music Memory Contest. Fourth and fifth graders can try out for choir and participate in the Recorder Festival held each year. Students should wear shoes that will stay on their feet during movement activities.
ONE WORLD SCHOOLS
Beginning in 2013, Summitt Elementary and the Anderson High School vertical team take part in a Foreign Language Experience Program (FLEX) called One World Schools. Along with the other elementary schools in Summitt’s vertical team, Summitt provides foreign language instruction to first through fifth graders. Students receive lessons in foreign language and culture, once a week, from a highly trained teacher who travels between the campuses. The five languages are Spanish (1st grade), French (2nd grade), German (3rd grade), Chinese (4th grade), and Latin (5th grade). Summitt is home to the 3rd grade German teacher.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Physical Education instruction is provided by a specialist in kindergarten through fifth grade. Your child needs to be equipped for Physical Education class in the following ways:
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing (no dresses on P.E. days)
- Wear tennis shoes, sneakers (no hard sole, cleated shoes, boots, sandals, or jellies) If your child is unable to participate fully in P.E., he/she needs to bring a note from the parents. If non-participation exceeds two days, a doctor’s note is required. Children having medical problems that may be affected by physical exertion will need an explanation in writing sent to the P.E. specialist.
After school activities may be available. Students are encouraged to participate in running events (cross country and Marathon Kids) throughout the year.
Specialized Instruction
GIFTED AND TALENTED
Kindergarten-fifth grade students are identified in the fall or spring semester for the gifted and talented program. G/T students work independently, in small groups with other G/T students, and in large groups with students of varying abilities.
ESL AND BILINGUAL EDUCATION

PRE-KINDERGARTEN
Summitt Elementary hosts an early childhood program for 4 year olds to prepare them for Kindergarten. Learn more to see if your child qualifies.
ECSE

LIFE SKILLS

AISD is committed to meeting the unique needs students. Services are determined based on the students needs. Access to and progress in the general curriculum is the primary instructional goal for all services, thus IEPs are crafted within a standards-based framework for all students with a disability.
