I’m Katie Sieber and this is my first year at Summitt. I have a Masters in Professional Counseling from Texas State University. I’ve worked in education for the last 16 years in and around Austin. My focus is to create an open door and loving, supportive space for all of our students to be seen, heard, and grow socially and emotionally. I love working with students, staff, and families to create the most cohesive team to support our youngest learners.
Professional School Counselor
The counselors assist all students to develop their academic, career, personal, and social abilities.
Summitt Elementary has also been recognized for Excellence in School Counseling for the last five years with a CREST Award.
Counselor Guidance Curriculum
Counselor Guidance Curriculum: The counselor meets with students directly in their classrooms on a bi-weekly basis to help develop social and emotional skills. Examples of activities include conflict resolution, healthy habits, team building, character education, peer pressure, career, and communication. Lesson topics are chosen in collaboration with the classroom teacher and based on American School Counseling Association (ASCA), Texas Education Agency (TEA), and Austin ISD guidelines.
Responsive Services
The counselors provide individual assistance to students when a problem or concern is affecting relationships and/or educational achievement. Individual counseling is limited to three meetings. The counselor holds small groups with students who share similar concerns.
Individual Planning
The counselors assist students with transitions to middle school, goal setting, classroom behavior support and resources to caretakers for students’ needs.
System Support
The counselors support the students’ educational, social and emotional achievement in partnership with parents and staff through consultation. This includes coordinating with teachers, parents, and administration.
- Collaboration: The key to success is collaboration between all members of a child's world. School counselors help build and support this ongoing collaboration by conferencing and giving support to teachers and families. Please don't ever hesitate to reach out. We have many resources to offer or can just be a listening ear.
- Limited Individual Sessions: We offer short-term counseling to students who are in need. Referrals to long-term support are available at caregiver's request.
Confidentiality Policy
We respect the right to confidentiality of students, parents, teachers and other school staff. Situations jeopardizing student safety including incidents of abuse, imminent danger to self or others, and bullying are reported to the campus administrator in accordance with school policy.
Special Programs
PALS
The Austin ISD PALS program enables young people to use their potential to make a difference in their lives and the lives of others. Fifth graders serve as student mentors to younger students. Anderson high schoolers also serve as PALS for Summitt students once a week and play games and build relationships with their mentees.
Adult Mentors
We look for ways to bring in our community (teachers in the school or caring adults outside of the school) to help our Eagles succeed. Our adult mentors come once a week during the child's lunch time and are all vetted and background checked through Austin ISD VOLY system. *Please note that mentees are chosen by staff and spaces are very limited. We continue to grow our mentor program to be able to include more students in need of this support.*
No Place for Hate
No Place for Hate® also helps to create and sustain inclusive school environments where all students feel valued and have the opportunity to succeed by promoting respect for individual differences while challenging bigotry and prejudice.
